A view spot which is also a starting point of the Tanesashi Coast Promenade. You can catch an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean from the observation area which almost feels like a fortress. Promenades around the area are maintained and taking a walk while looking at the “Hamanasu” or Japanese rose which blooms from the middle of June to the middle of July is also recommended. Breeding grounds for the black-tailed gull which is designated as one of Japan's protected species. There is a deep red torii archway at the entrance to the island, and the Kabushima Shrine enshrines the god of thriving business and guardian deity of the sea. Between March and August during the breeding season, countless numbers of black-tailed gulls cover the island, and you might even be hit by their droppings, said to be “Black-tailed Gull Bombs” if lucky. For that reason, free umbrellas to protect you from getting hit are also available. Those who are lucky enough to hit by these falling "presents" can receive a Certificate of Good Fortune.

Stretching approximately 14km from Kabushima Island to Hashikami is a coastline which consists of various types of terrain such as desolate rocky and sandy beaches as well as pine groves. The Tanesashi Natural Lawn is a key example of the scenery here, consists of a natural lawn that stretches down to the beach, you'll feel incredibly liberated. A beach located in Sanriku Fukko National Park which continues approximately 5.5km. In addition to the rich variation of scenery such as sandy beaches, large stretches of grass, and reef areas, playing on the rocky beaches of Ojakaigan, fishing offshore on one of the tour fishing boats that leave from Kominatogyoko fishing harbor are also popular activities. There are also hiking courses available along the coast so looking at the flowers of the various beach plants while walking is also recommended.

Mt. Hashikami is a mountain that reaches a height of 739.6m and is located on the border of Aomori Prefecture and Iwate Prefecture. In the neighboring Obirakitai, natural azalea flourishes causing the area to become lively with mountain climbers around the end of May to the beginning of June which is the best time for viewing. Beyond the vivid pink colors of the flowers blooming, you can get a spectacular view of Hachinohe. There is a walk path from here to the mountain summit which can be covered in approximately 30 minutes.

Sochinju or local Shinto deity of the Nanbu Clan, with a history that extends back to the Kamakura period and has gained a lot of faith as a Nanbu Ichinomiya (the highest ranking) shrine. The main shrine and main entrance were erected during the Edo period and have been designated national Important Cultural Assets. Additionally, visitors can find 25 precious cultural assets in the National Treasure Hall such as the national treasures "Akaito Odoshi Yoroi "(armor laced with red thread) and "Shiroito Odoshi Tsumadori Yoroi" (armor laced with white thread)which are representative of Japan's art of armor crafting.

A cultural facility for tourism which conveys the charm of the sea of Hachinohe. A white lighthouse that stands in the Kominato area in Hashikami. Surrounding you is a 180° panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. Located at the most southeastern tip of Aomori Prefecture, it is known as being the point where the sun rises before anywhere else within the prefecture. At the end of July, it becomes a venue for the “Hashikami Ichigoni Festival” where you can purchase local cuisine that uses sea urchin and abalone at a reasonable price.

A brewery that was established in 1775. An experience exchange facility that uses a now-closed school. Equipped with an agricultural processing facility, charcoal production hut, and plastic greenhouse, it is loaded with choices of various workshops revolving around living in the countryside, with from ideas of the locals such as making soba, charcoal, tofu and miso. The largest festival in the Hachinohe region that boasts approximately 300 years of history and tradition. A breathtaking traditional parade of 27 gorgeous and extravagant festival floats, portable shrines, tiger dance, Shinto music and dance pass through the town to pray for the peace of the town and an abundant harvest. A form of local performing art that calls spring and a good harvest to the Hachinohe region, and has been designated as one of Japan's Important Intangible Folk Cultures. “Enburi-gumi” performance groups composed of 20 to 30 members including the master, lead actors, female dancers, and festival music performers parade through the city. The highlight is the “ Issei-zuri” a simultaneous dance that more than 30 Enburi-gumi groups perform in the heart of the city and it is very impressive.

A project from “Zenyuseki” which is an association of fine stone shops nation-wide, it shows the landing points of tsunamis and passes on the lessons learned to future generations. There are three locations in Hachinohe where tsunami memorial stones have been placed, and at the Taga Multipurpose Playground along with a female bronze statue that is surrounded by stone pillars in the shape of a backwards L , stands a stone monument engraved with messages from the students of Hachinohe Ichikawa Junior High School.

An unusual rock formation with a hole resembling a window ("mado") formed through years of erosion caused by the raging waves of Kita-Sanriku. Registered as a geopoint under “Sanriku Geo Park.“ Fossilized oyster reefs can be viewed in the surrounding rocky areas of Madoiwa Rock. The Kosode Coast has become one of Sanriku Geopark's geosites with its countless strange rock formations which enables visitors to see the historical geological transformations of the Earth. A dynamic coastline composed of 200m palisades, large and small strange rock formations formed through erosion caused by harsh waves, oddly-shaped stones and caves that stretch approximately 8km. Board a small “sappa” fishing boat and see Jodogahama Beach's Hachinohe-ana, or “Blue Cave.” You can enjoy a view of the incredibly clear water of the ocean which, when hit by the sunlight pouring through the entrance of the cave, can sparkle in an emerald green or cobalt blue color. Boasted as one of the largest spouting holes nation-wide. The hole which was created by erosion causes water to shoot up above ground when the crashing waves hitting the shore. You cannot see the tide shooting up when the waves are gentle, but it can reach as high as 30m during times of intense waves and Tohoku's winds are strong.

A picturesque scenery that represents Miyako. Its name comes from a Priest Reikyo, a Buddhist priest who lived during the Edo period who said “It's just like Amida paradise.” Sharply-pointed white rhyolite huddled together, the green pine trees, the white color of the rocky surface and the ultramarine color of the ocean creates a beautiful contrast. This changes with the seasons and in the winter you can see the landscape covered in blankets of snow.

The sandy beaches of Kirkiri Beach, when walked on, make a scraping sound “kiri kiri” which is said to be the origin of the beach's name. Additionally, “kiri kiri” in the Ainu language means “sandy beach,” which is another explanation for the origin of the area's name. There was considerable damage done by the tsunami that happened during the Great East Japan Earthquake, however, it has regained its beautiful sandy beaches.

Kuji is one of the main filming locations where the NHK morning TV drama “Amachan”,the story of a female diver catching fresh seafood was filmed not only in Japan but overseas as well. The props and photographs of scenery used in the filming are on display here. Items loved by Amachan fans are lined up here such as the dioramas of Kita-Sanriku and the signs belonging to Cafe Rias which appeared in the drama.

An underground aquarium which used a tunnel of Kuji's national oil storage base. It was completely destroyed by the Great East Japan Earthquake but was reopened in April of 2016. You can see creatures of the sea in this tunnel aquarium and you can feel like you are actually in the water. You can even meet “Kamekichi,” the green turtle which survived the earthquake disaster. A performance by the northernmost Ama divers and the Nanbu divers can be seen on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays in the tank that recreates Kuji's sea.

A museum dedicated to the study of amber located in Kuji which is famous as one of the sites where amber is produced. Along with the amber of each country, you can learn about large ore, amber containing insects, handcrafts, the history of amber and its charm. Especially check out the world's first and oldest fossil of “bird-like feather remains” dated as far back as approximately 87,000,000 years ago uncovered in Iwate Prefecture. The tunnel of the Noda Tamagawa Mine, which was known as one of Japan's prominent manganese mines is 420m deep and spans 28km. A section of this is open to the public as a sightseeing tunnel. Inside the tunnel the temperature is around 10°C all-year-round. Scenes of mining have been reproduced and precious ores of the world are also on display. The “Marine Rose” which is made by polishing rhondonite which in Japan is produced only here is a popular souvenir among visitors.

The Gyoran Kannon Statue standing tall at 48.5m looks over a perfect view of Kamaishi Bay. The Gyoran Konnon with a fish in its hand is one of 33 Kannon that appear in various forms to save people. Aside from being able to view the heavily indented coastline from the observation platform located inside, it enshrines the 33 Kannon and the Seven Deities of Good Luck. Outside visitors can find the“ Wishing Bell” chosen to be the “Lovers' Sanctuary".

A museum focused the iron located in Kamaishi, the origin of Japan's present day iron manufacturing. Along with its full-scale model of the Hasino iron mining and smelting site, and a theater showing a film which lets you experience the steel creation process, the museum educates you on the history of iron manufacturing through documents and panels. There is also a corner where visitors can create their own original key holders while experiencing the casting process (500 yen to experience). You can also see a sweeping view of Kamaishi Bay from the observation terrace.

The Goishi Coast stretches approximately 6km southeast along the Massaki Peninsula which protrudes out into the Ofunato Bay. Board one of the small fishing boats and cruise around the coast to see the cliffs with large and unusual rock formations while occasionally getting showered by the waves to get the full experience. It is said that one will find happiness by going through Anatoshiiso, a location with three holes that were formed through erosion caused by the waves. One of the 23 “Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution,” that belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is composed of the remains of an iron ore mine, transportation routes and a primitive blast furnace. The blasting furnace which is open to the public is Japan's oldest existing Western style blast furnace, and consists of remains of waterways, and 3 stone blast furnace ruins. The explanations of the history and other information can be seen on panels and movies located in the Hashino Mine Information Center.

The camellia is the symbol of Ofunato City. Inside a large glassed facility visitors can find 550 different types of camellia from 13 countries in the world, allowing you to appreciate their vivid colors, red, pink, white and yellow. The blooming season for camellia is from the beginning of October to the end of April, and the best time for viewing is from January to March. Products made from camellia such as camellia oil, cosmetics and sweets are also available for purchase.

A museum which focuses on the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster and tsunami. In addition to being able to hear storytellers recount their experiences of the disaster while observing footage of the tsunami, you can learn about the dreadful power of tsunamis while viewing photographs of Ofunato before and after the disaster in the panel exhibition corner. A sightseeing spot located in front of the BRT("Bus Rapid Transit") “Kiseki-no-Ippon-Matsu” or “Miracle Pine” bus stop. Hoya, called the “Pineapple of the Sea.” Hinrono, Taneichi is the area where you can find naturally produced hoya. Divers in this area practice a traditional method of fishing known as “Nanbu Diving” where a diver wears a helmet and swimming gear, and dives to depths of 10m to catch natural hoya with their hands. Those who visit can enjoy the taste of natural hoya, and “Hoya Ramen,” which is a salty flavored noodle soup topped with wakame seaweed, and natural hoya in many restaurants located in the city. A beautiful seafood rice bowl (2,980 yen) served in “Sankairi,” a restaurant located inside the “Kuji Yamase Dofukan.” roadside station. Generously loaded with delicious seafood such as botan shrimp and Sanriku-produced abalone harvested from the sea of Sanriku, and is served with a side dish of thick seaweed plated on a small dish, and “Two-treasure” soup which contains sea urchin and scallops. Mamebu soup is a type of soup made with Japanese-style broth made from kelp and dried fish and flavored with soy sauce. A winery that was established in 2016 on top of a hill that provides an unobstructed view of the Pacific Ocean. Even in Iwate Prefecture which boasts being the largest cultivation area for mountain grapes, Noda is famous for being a large production area. Mountain grapes grown in the cool breeze, also known as “yamase,” that blows off of the Pacific Ocean are used to create a wine that has a sour and fruity flavor produced by the late harvest of the grapes. The tasting room is open on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays from the end of April to the end of August.

In Yamada, where the cultivation of oysters is prosperous. From the beginning of November to the end of June, you can enjoy all-you-can-eat oysters steamed on a steaming-hot steel plate. "Noda Salt,” made from natural sea salt is a specialty produced in Noda. It is made using the traditional technique of putting underground sea water of Noda Harbor that has been filtered into an iron pot, and boiling this water down carefully using a fire kindled with firewood for 4 days until the salt crystallizes. The salt includes minerals from the sea water, giving it a particular mild flavor. Visitors can make reservations to tour the workshop and can also experience making salt themselves. The hands-on experience costs 500 yen per visitor.

A cruise where you can make your way around Kitayamazaki Cliffs with its steep cliffs, strange and bizarre stones formed by raging waves, and continuous caves. The “Kotatsu Train” is an event train that runs only in the winter where passengers can enjoy a tatami-style interior and a blanket-covered heated kotatsu table built into the floor. Warm air blows out from the bottom keeping the inside of the kotatsu nice and warm. Enjoy this train journey that warms not only your body but your heart as well. The traditional “Namomi” performance that takes place in the train makes it well worth it. Keep an eye out for the namomi that suddenly appears in one of the tunnels!

An event train that is a restoration of the Class 58 #239 steam locomotive train that runs on the JR Kamaishi line between Hanamaki Sta. and Kamaishi Sta. This train's theme is Kenji Miyazawa's “Night on the Milky Way Train,” showing how this author who lived from the Taisho era to the Showa era saw the world. There is also a gallery and planetarium where you can experience the kind of world that appears in his works.

Enjoy a cruise on a fishing boat driven by one of the local fishermen. The production of scallops is booming in Koishihama and its brand scallops are reputed for their meatiness and delicious taste. Tanohata, a town and harbor which was swallowed up by the tsunami on March 11, 2011. From life in the shelters supported through the bonds of people and aid, the hardships of living in temporary housing, to the new life in Disaster Reconstruction Public Housing, storytellers talk about the lessons they learned and the experiences they went through all while mourning the many victims and damage that occurred. In April of 2014, Sanriku Railways, which was struck by the Great East Japan Earthquake, reopened all its lines as a symbol of restoration of the disaster-stricken areas. The “Disaster Education Train” provides a form of “study tourism” to learn about disaster prevention where passengers can see, hear, and experience the state of the area along the railway. While on the train passengers will hear about the conditions of the earthquake from Sanriku Railway employees or people who live along the railway line while the train is moving or temporarily stopping in areas where one can see the current situation of the disaster. (Reservations required.)

This is a one hour course where a guide will take participants up to the breakwater structure, and learn about the records and lessons of the disaster in Taro district. Valuable footage, taken from the sixth floor of the Taro Kanko Hotel which was struck all the way up to the fourth floor by the tsunami that exceeded a height of 17m, shows the incredibly destructive power of the tsunami. There is also a two hour course where participants will walk along the evacuation route and view the unusually shaped Sanoiwa Rock. (Reservation required.)

In the Bussankan, visitors can purchase local seasonal vegetables and Kuji amber products. The giant festival floats used in the “Kuji Autumn Festival” and portable shrines are displayed in the Tourism Information Center. Footage of the actual festival can be seen on screens set up in the facility. There are also restaurants which are popular for their deluxe seafood rice bowls such as the “Ama Don” topped with abalone and sea squirts, or the “Kaiun Don” which includes a written fortune.

The Visitor Center is immediately next to the observation area at Kitayamazaki Cliffs and allows you to get a completely unhindered view of the Pacific Ocean from a wooden deck. Kuji, the largest production area of amber in Japan. An island located in the Otsuchi Bay also called “Hyotanjima” or “Gourd Island” because of its shape, has a circumference of 200m and has become a symbol of Otsuchi Town.Benzaiten who is enshrined in the shrine located on the island is a guardian deity which ensures an abundant catch of fish as well as safety, and the main shrine and statue of Benzaiten remained safe in the Great East Japan Earthquake. A breakwater structure stretches from the coast to the island allowing visitors to walk across to the shrine.

The Whale and Sea Research Center reopened in July of 2017 following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Through the ecology of whales, visitors learn about the sea of Sanriku where they live and its rich natural environments. The main attraction of the museum is a skeleton belonging to the world's largest sperm whale measuring 17.6m in length and weighing in at 60 tons caught in the sea of Sanriku.

The Takata-matsubara Pine Grove which is said to have contained approximately 70,000 pine trees was washed away by the giant tsunami which occurred during the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster, however one tree miraculously remained, and is now called the “Kiseki-no-Ipponmatu” or the“ Miracle Pine.” It died from the effects of the ocean water later and it is now preserved as a monument to teach later generations of the disastrous earthquake. It is lit up from sunset to 9PM every day.

A group of 23 wooden lodges ("Banya") constructed in a line at the inlet of Tsukue Beach. These lodges were used long ago as a place of work as well as a location to store fishing equipment, and chosen to be one of the “A selection of 100 historical and cultural heritage sites and heirlooms related to fisheries and fishing villages which would like to hand down to future generations.” It was washed away and destroyed due to the giant tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake disaster but was rebuilt, and in some of the lodges visitors can enjoy a Banya tour, experience making salt as well as cuisine from this area. All activities require a reservation.

They preserve and succeed the renowned construction techniques of “Kesen Daiku”, one of the four greatest groups of carpenters from the Kesen Region in Iwate Prefecture, the history of which began in the Edo Period. The main house is an early-Meiji style one-storied wooden thatched house, and replicates the houses commonly seen in the Kesen Region. The central pillar is made from locally grown materials, such as Kesen Cedar. The grave roof truss and the spacious arrangement are stunningly amazing.

Memorial site of the toilets and kitchens of a camping ground that was damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami in 2011. This disaster memorial park consists of the Tsunami Memorial Hall dedicated to conveying the reality of the disaster and conducting disaster training, the Kamaishi Memorial Park dedicated to victims of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, and the Unosato Visitor Center complete with restaurants and a souvenir shop. The second registered Michi-no-eki (a roadside rest area) in Iwate Prefecture. The building suffered damage as a result of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and in order to convey the threat of tsunamis to later generations, it was maintained in its damaged state. Currently, the site is being converted into the Takata-Matsubara Tsunami Reconstruction Memorial Park (scheduled for completion in 2021), and the Iwate Tsunami Memorial is scheduled to open in September 2019.

A beautiful cape located in the Sanriku Fukko National Park. At the tip of the cape is a grotto formed through years of erosion, a “Shiofukiiwa” or spouting hole where waves crash against the shore causing the tide to shoot up from a hole, and near by is an area that was damaged by the tsunami yet a portion of it miraculously remained with a pine tree intact. It is called the “Ryu-no-Matsu” or “Dragon Pine Tree” because its shape resembles that of a rising dragon, and it is a symbol of restoration.

Ogama's “Oreishi” is a 16m high and 3m wide marble stone pillar that was formed through erosion caused by waves and towers high in the sea among the violent white-crested waves. There are many unusual and unique rock formations such as the “Todoiwa” or “Sea Lion Rock” where sea lions are said to rest and the “Tunnel Rock” where sea water flows into a hole in a rock that formed through erosion.

One of the Minami-Sanriku's best scenic view points. Here you can see a spectacular view of raging waves splashing up and surging forth between a rock that has been split into two. Chosen as one of the top 100 Best Beaches with White Sands and Blue Pines, and in the middle of February and the end of October you can get a view of the sun rising between the rocks. A legend remains that due to a quarrel between neighboring villages, a god split the rocks on the cape, creating a border between the villages.

An isolated island with a circumference of 11km that can be reached in approximately 40 minutes by boat from Ishinomaki Port. Long ago, cats were used to keep mice and rats away and so many cats now live on the island that it is said that there are currently more cats than humans. There is even a cat shrine located in the center of the island. It is highly recommended that visitors stay in one of the quaint lodges where you can see the cobalt blue ocean and enjoy the exquisite seafood.

An art museum located on top of a hill that gives you a complete view of Kesennuma. The unique design of the building won the Japan Architectural Institute of Japan's Award, and there are visitors who come to the museum to observe the design. It carried out an investigation and recorded the damages which occurred immediately following the earth quick, and contains exhibits displaying things Immmediately after the Great East Japan Earthquake research was carried out and damage was recorded and the museum exhibits items such as photographic records, damaged items, and documentation of past tsunami disasters belonging to affecting the Sanriku Coastline Group. There are also exhibits of folk customs pertaining to about food and art.

A museum which specializes in sharks located in Kesennuma, Japan's largest producer of shark fin products. It has uniquely interactive exhibits such as a life-sized great white shark with its giant mouth wide-open and the body of a 4 meter whale shark with a pattern projected on it through projection mapping. There is also an area where visitors can learn about the situation regarding the earthquake damage and current restoration efforts through films and documents.

In this area, shops which were damaged by the earthquake gathered and opened temporary facilities in 2012. In December of 2016, it was briefly closed but opened in full force in 2017. Twenty-eight shops which include food and drink, fresh fish, and direct sellers gathered in the building designed by Kengo Kuma, a world-famous architect. There are five restaurants where you can eat “Minami-Sanriku Kirakira Don” which is a seafood rice bowl filled with several different types of delicious seafood. You can also purchase sashimi and seafood rice bowls at the fish markets for take-out.

Here you can find exhibits showing a replica of the “Sant Juan Bautista” a western wooden sailing ship that made a round trip between Spain and Japan approximately 400 years ago as well as about the history and culture of that time, such as the mission of Hasekura Tsunenaga, a retainer for the Date family. A shrine located halfway up Mt. Kinka, an isolated island which can be found at the tip of the Oshika Peninsula. Here you can see items excavated from a shell mound belonging to the Jomon people who lived before the year 300 BC such as earthenware, stone tools, and accessories as well as see how the people of that time lived. Inside the museum are exhibits showing cross-sections of the shell mound removed from the historical ruins. Opened as a mausoleum to Date Mitsumune, grandson of Date Masamune, a feudal lord of Sendai. Located here is “Sankeiden,” Miyagi Prefectures oldest mausoleum, nationally designated as an Important Cultural Asset, and you can enjoy the appearance of the four seasons such as the light-up event to celebrate the changing colors of the leaves in the fall carried out in the moss-covered Japanese garden. You can find on the left-hand side of the temple gate a “Marriage Kannon” which is said to bring good luck to a couple's marriage as well as many lined-up marriage “Kokeshi” wooden dolls. The tea room was recieved by Date Masamune from Lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi approximately 400 years ago, it was moved from Kyoto and rebuilt at his mansion in Edo. Masamune's son Tadamune then moved it to its current location. The richly colored wall paintings and fusuma paintings in the alcove are impressive. From inside you can get a complete view of Matsushima Bay and sip on some maccha green tea while enjoying the beautiful scenery.

A temple which was rebuilt by Date Masamune, acts as a landmark of Matsushima. The statues of the five great wisdom kings installed there are only operated to the public once every 33 years. Twelve animals are carved into the four sides of the temple. To get to the small island where the Godaido Temple is located, you will cross an open-floored bridge painted in a vermilion color that goes over the transparent sea below.

Believed to be the god of safe travel on the sea, safe childbirth, and continued luck in the fortunes of war. The grounds are located on a slightly elevated hill and in addition to main shrine and front shrine nationally designated as Important Cultural Assets, you can also catch an unbroken scenic view of Matsushima Bay. The path composed of 202 steps which connects the temple grounds to the surrounding town also conveys a sense of elegance. Also famous for the Shiogama cherry blossoms, a cherry tree with large flowers that can contain as many as 40 to 50 petals, which bloom around the beginning of May.

Situated on a plateau, this is a complex to provide experiences for children that reutilizes a now closed-down school. The building is a replica of the former JR Onagawa Station that was washed away by the tsunami. Matsushima, where you can find as many as 260 islands, both large and small. Take the Matsushima Pleasure Boat Round Trip Course, the cruise that will give you the chance to see the beauty of this view up close. The highlight of this festival is the “Mikoshi Kaijotogyo,” the procession of moving the portable shrines to the port. The two “gozabune” boats which carry the portable shrines of Shiwahiko Shrine and Shiogama Shrine follow approximately 100 accompanying boats, all hoisting their “tairyo-bata” flags, and proceed through the Matsushima Bay. At the festival held the night before the main festival, you can see as many as 8,000 fireworks launched over the sea.

Minamisanriku, a town where homes were damaged by the tsunami. The storytelling bus tour looks at the after-effects of that tsunami and aims to increase awareness and help prevent people from forgetting the lessons learned from the earthquake. Yuriage, an area located in Natori which was seriously damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake. Here participants can see the records of the earthquake and tsunami damage as well as the areas carrying out reconstruction. With the “Yuriage-Shinsai-wo-Tsutaeru-Kai,” a group which passes on the stories of the earthquake in Yuriage, you can make a reservation with a volunteer guide who will talk you about the damage (due to the continuous reconstruction, the places viewed may change).

A new tourism center that opened in 2016 in the new town located on higher ground that residents collectively relocated to following the earthquake. Visitors can find local products sold in buildings heavily constructed with lumber, giving off a nice cozy feeling. Kesennuma Oshima, also referred to as the "green pearl," is the largest outlying island in the Tohoku region. The bridge as a symbol of hope connecting Kesennuma Oshima and the mainland was opened to traffic on April 7, 2019. The castle ruins of Date Masamune, one of the Sengoku feudal lords that ruled over Sendai 400 years ago. The castle itself no longer remains, but the stone wall which have been carefully reconstructed helps to preserve those ancient times. Held every year in December. This light-up event is held on Jozenji-dori Avenue, an area that is a symbol of "Mori-no-Miyako (City of Trees)", Sendai. Arahama Elementary School, the site which children, teaching staff and local residents fled to at the time of the earthquake and was hit by the tsunami up to the 2nd floor was reopened as a remnant of the earthquake disaster. Photographs and footage are displayed inside the school which show the progress of events from the time the earthquake occurred, evacuation, when the tsunami hit, to the time of rescue, demonstrating the terrible power and threat of the tsunami. Even now, visitors can view the restoration and reconstruction taking place from the roof of the school.

A 100-meter high Kannon statue that oversees the city of Sendai. The interior is divided into 12 layers, and the jewel of Nyoihoju, the object of worship, and Dainichinyorai, an invaluable Buddhist statue, are located along with the twelve divine generals, the thirty three Kannon statues and 108 Buddhist statues. There are two observatory windows from where visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Sendai City and the Pacific Ocean.

Osaki Hachimangu was built by Date Masamune in 1607. The main shrine with a hipped roof, Ishinoma, and the house of worship are combined together. This style of construction is called Gongenzukuri, and Osaki Hachimangu is the only shrine with this style from the Azuchi Momoyama Period, thus, it is designated as a national treasure of Japan. On January 14th every year, they hold Donto Festival, a festival that prays for health and prosperity for new years by burning pine ornaments and old amulets.

The Nikka Whisky Miyagikyo Distillery is located between the pristine flows of the Hirose River and the Shinkawa River. Here, the whisky base is processed in the factory's pot stills (indirect steam-heating method) and Coffey stills. Visitors can opt for the guided tour where the tour guide will explain the whisky making process and the history of Nikka Whisky. An aquarium exhibiting approximately 130,000 creatures belonging to 800 different species. In 1160 the end of the Heian era , Princess Tokuhime, said to be the daughter of Fujiwara no Kiyohira who created the golden culture of Hiraizumi, constructed this temple as a memorial to her husband, Iwaki Norimichi. The entire area around Amidado Temple has been made into Jodo Teien (Pure Land Garden), with a pond and the “Kodai Hasu” or “Ancient Lotus” in the summer and the large ginkgo trees in the fall paint an elegant and colorful landscape. It is Fukushima Prefecture's only National Treasure structure and has the reputation for bringing good fortune in love.

Introduces Japanese industrial promotion and the long history of coal fields which assisted in Japan's modernization as well as the fossil materials uncovered in Iwaki and other countries. A festival organized by the three shrines in the northern part of the Hamadori Area in Fukushima Prefecture that has been designated one of the Japanese Important Intangible Folk Culture Assets. Over 3 days, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, at the end of July every year, horse-mounted warriors donning armor take you to a scene straight out of the Sengoku period. The highlights of this festival are the armored horse racing event which takes place at the Hibarigahara Festival Site and "Shinki Soudatsusen "(the shrine flag competition). Those in the audience will be blown away by the intensity of these brave-looking mounted warriors blazing down the field.

Ohama, Haragama, and Isobe, located in the City of Soma, were heavily damaged by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake. This facility includes exhibits such as scenes from the various regions prior to the earthquake, photographs of traditional rituals, and documented footage taken immediately after the earthquake struck. As well as showing the original landscape of 3 areas both inside and outside, it is considered to be a support for the hearts of those families who have lost loved ones and message to future generations of the threat of earthquakes and the lessons learned from it.

A museum which teaches visitors about "Soma Nomaoi, nationally designated as a Important Intangible Cultural Heritage as well as about Minamisoma's nature, history and folk customs. In addition to dioramas of the “Shinki Soudatsusen” (where hundreds of riders compete to capture flags shot into the air with fireworks), sets of armor, there are also exhibits of other historical items such as fossils dated between the Paleozoic era to the Cenozoic era and farming equipment. A shrine that was built by Soma Yoshitane, the 18th feudal lord of the Soma Clan, in 1643. It has been revered as a tutelary deity of the Soma Family. The main shrine, the hall of offerings and the house of worship are all Nagarezukuri-style Momoyama buildings, and are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. At Somanoumaoi, held from the last Saturday of July every year, the kickoff ceremony is held in a rigid atmosphere within the precincts of Soma Nakamura Castle. Their annual grand festival is held from April 18 and April 19 when the cherry flowers bloom on the approach to the shrine.

Visitors can explore the great nature of Matsukawaaura and learn to protect the environment. Although it was heavily damaged by the tsunami in 2011, it reopened after recovery in July, 2012. Kitaizumi Beach is Japan's foremost surfing destination. The Iwaki Marine Tower (59.99 m in height) is located in the spacious 700,000 m2 Misaki Park at the cape on Iwaki City's eastern edge. Japan's first national soccer training center reopened to the public in July 2018 after being damaged by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
