Tour the Sendai Umino-Mori Aquarium

Encounter the many creatures of the sea!
An aquarium with approximately 100 tanks covering a space of 9,000m2 displaying some of the world's as well as Japan's fascinating and unique creatures. This aquarium is filled with plenty of things to see and do such as the giant tank that recreates the habitat of the sea of Sanriku, interacting with penguins and South American sea lions. There is also and dolphin and seal performances. The Backyard Tour where you get to explore the back areas with the aquarium's caretakers is also popular among visitors.

Sendai Castle Site

Date Masamune's statue watches over the town
The castle ruins of Date Masamune, one of the Sengoku feudal lords that ruled over Sendai 400 years ago. The castle itself no longer remains, but the stone wall which have been carefully reconstructed helps to preserve those ancient times. A statue of Date Masamune riding a horse stands in the inner citadel ruins where you can catch the perfect view of the stores and houses located in Sendai's city center. Use Sendai's tourist city loop bus, “Loople Sendai,” as a convenient way to get around.

Take the Sendai City Subway to Arai Station

A convenient means of transportation in the city.
If you need to get around Sendai City, we recommend using the City Subway Nanboku Line and Tozai Line from JR Sendai Station. Using the newly established (2015) Tozai line, you can travel from Japan's highest elevation station, Yagiyama Zoological Park station, all the way to the eastern coast terminal station of Arai. For those going to Sendai Castle Site or the Sendai City Museum, the Sendai International Center station is perfect for you. All day passes are available.

Sendai 3.11 Memorial Community Center

Memories of the earthquake - to the future, to the world
In addition to being a location to learn about the Great East Japan Earthquake, it also acts as an entrance to the eastern coastal region of Sendai which was hit hard by the tsunami. In addition to permanent exhibits that teach visitors about the damage inflicted by the earthquake and the current state of restoration to the area, exhibits which demonstrate the damage through how those in the region live and their memories, there are also workshops where you can have a chance to discuss the disaster caused by the earthquake as well as field tours where participants will visit the surrounding areas.

Have Sendai's famous beef tongue for lunch

Cooked with simple seasoning and full of flavor
A flavor originating from Sendai, beef tongue that has been seasoned with salt and pepper and grilled over a charcoal fire. It was invented by the first owner of the Aji Tasuke restaurant, who set up shop in the center of Sendai. It is so well-known nationally that people think of Sendai when grilled beef tongue is mentioned, and over 100 specialty shops can be found across the city. Each shop works to come up with their own speciality dishes, serving it in stews, sushi, etc..

Earthquake Ruins Sendai Arahama Elementary School

Its appearance left untouched from the damage
Arahama Elementary School, the site which children, teaching staff and local residents fled to at the time of the earthquake and was hit by the tsunami up to the 2nd floor was reopened as a remnant of the earthquake disaster. Photographs and footage are displayed inside the school which show the progress of events from the time the earthquake occurred, evacuation, when the tsunami hit, to the time of rescue, demonstrating the terrible power and threat of the tsunami. Even now, visitors can view the restoration and reconstruction taking place from the roof of the school.

Onagawa Fisheries Industry Experience Hall “AGAIN Station"

Enjoy products and experience fisheries!
The building is a replica of the former JR Onagawa Station that was washed away by the tsunami. With Onagawa as its focus, those who stop by can find marine products and local products of the surrounding cities and towns sold here. There is also a corner where participants can experience various aspects of Onagawa's fishing industry (reservation is required at least one week in advance). You can also enjoy sampling food after learning how to handle and cook scallops, and arrange seafood rice bowls.

A shopping area which follows a brick road that starts from JR Onagawa Station towards the ocean lined with 35 shops such as restaurants, small super markets and retail shops. The building nearest to the sea is a commercial establishment called “Hama Terrace.” Here you can find fresh fish, marine products on sale, restaurants where you can eat seasonal seafood lined up and enjoy some shopping and dining while admiring the ocean view.

Learning about the earthquake on the story telling bus

A bus tour around the areas flooded by the tsunami
Minamisanriku, a town where homes were damaged by the tsunami. The storytelling bus tour looks at the after-effects of that tsunami and aims to increase awareness and help prevent people from forgetting the lessons learned from the earthquake. The bus tour lasts about 60 minutes and passengers can also observes those areas affected by floods. Local guides on board talk about their own personal experiences and the lessons they learned from the earthquake disaster. English and Chinese (Traditional) guide books are also available. Reservations are required.

Shopping street with a complete view of Shizugawa Bay
In this area, shops which were damaged by the earthquake gathered and opened temporary facilities in 2012. In December of 2016, it was briefly closed but opened in full force in 2017. Twenty-eight shops which include food and drink, fresh fish, and direct sellers gathered in the building designed by Kengo Kuma, a world-famous architect. There are five restaurants where you can eat “Minami-Sanriku Kirakira Don” which is a seafood rice bowl filled with several different types of delicious seafood. You can also purchase sashimi and seafood rice bowls at the fish markets for take-out.

Matsushima, where you can find as many as 260 islands, both large and small. Take the Matsushima Pleasure Boat Round Trip Course, the cruise that will give you the chance to see the beauty of this view up close. This cruise arrives and departs the boarding area located near JR Matsushima Coast Station. The course has various routes that are roughly 50 minutes, cruising around the various uniquely shaped islands such as Futagojima Island and Senganjima Island. “Niojima Island” which is shaped like someone wearing a beret with a cigarette in their mouth is also worth seeing.

Visit Zuiganji Temple and Godaido

Godaido - Symbol of Matsushima rebuilt by Masamune
A temple which was rebuilt by Date Masamune, acts as a landmark of Matsushima. The statues of the five great wisdom kings installed there are only operated to the public once every 33 years. Twelve animals are carved into the four sides of the temple. To get to the small island where the Godaido Temple is located, you will cross an open-floored bridge painted in a vermilion color that goes over the transparent sea below.

Zuiganji Temple - Date family temple constructed by Masamune
The temple of the Date family which Date Masamune took over 5 years time to completed its infrastructure in 1609.
